Thames Water Deephams Sewage Treatment Works – Lighting Upgrade

EOS Lighting Solutions worked with the electrical contractor on a design and build package to light every treatment area at Thames Water's Deephams Sewage Treatment Works in Edmonton, London, as part of a multimillion-pound upgrade. A full LED lighting design, delivered with IP65 EOS Contract Bulkhead Round, Cronos weatherproof and Flood Pro luminaires, achieved British Standard lighting levels with an energy-efficient, compliant design.

Deephams is one of Thames Water's largest sewage treatment works, serving the equivalent of almost 900,000 people, and the operatives who run it need safe, reliable light around every reservoir, gantry and route across the site, day and night. As part of a multimillion-pound upgrade, Thames Water required new lighting across all of the site's treatment areas, much of it in exposed, wet outdoor conditions. The electrical contractor needed a lighting partner who could design, specify and supply an energy-efficient system that met British Standards first time.

    Objectives

    • New LED lighting across all treatment areas
    • British Standard compliant lighting levels
    • Energy-efficient, compliant design
    • Robust luminaires for wet, exposed environments
    • Improve Health & Safety for site operatives
    • Support the electrical contractor on a design and build basis

    Solutions Provided

    LED Lighting Design

EOS carried out a full LED lighting design for the electrical contractor, covering every treatment area on the site. The design calculated lighting levels across process areas, walkways and access routes to make sure all areas achieved British Standard requirements, while keeping the number of luminaires and the energy load as low as possible.

Working on a design and build basis, EOS supported the contractor from design through to supply. This gave the project a single, compliant lighting specification and reduced risk for the contractor.

    Contract Bulkhead Round

The IP65 EOS Contract Bulkhead Round was installed around the circular treatment reservoirs. Its round form suits the curved structures, giving robust, efficient LED light around their perimeters for operatives carrying out checks and maintenance.

    Cronos Weatherproof

The IP65 Cronos weatherproof LED luminaire was mounted on the gantries over the large rectangular treatment bays. It gives operatives bright, consistent light along the gantries and across the bays below, where reliability in wet conditions is essential.

    Flood Pro

IP65 EOS Flood Pro LED floodlights were installed around the whole site to give uniform light across roads, open areas and the spaces between treatment structures. High output from fewer fittings keeps energy use down while giving operatives clear visibility everywhere on site.

    Key Results

    • British Standard compliant lighting levels across all treatment areas
    • Full LED lighting design delivered for the electrical contractor
    • Design and build partnership, giving the contractor one compliant lighting package
    • Energy-efficient design, using LED throughout and the fewest fittings needed
    • IP65 LED luminaires throughout, suited to wet, exposed treatment areas
    • Safer working for operatives around reservoirs, on gantries and across the whole site
    • Part of a multimillion-pound upgrade at Thames Water's Deephams works
