IP Ratings for LED Lighting: What Specifiers Need to Know

    What is an IP Rating?

The IP code consists of two digits:

    • First digit (0–6) — protection against solid objects, from no protection (0) to dust-tight (6) • Second digit (0–9) — protection against water, from no protection (0) to high-pressure steam cleaning (9)

For example, IP65 means: • 6 = dust-tight (no ingress of dust) • 5 = protected against water jets from any direction

The rating is determined by testing to BS EN 60529. Manufacturers must test the complete luminaire — not just the housing — because the weakest point (cable entries, diffuser seals, driver compartments) determines the rating.

    IP Rating Chart

Common IP ratings for LED luminaires and their meaning:

    • IP20 — Protected against solid objects > 12mm (fingers). No water protection. Suitable for dry internal environments only (offices, classrooms, retail).

    • IP40 — Protected against solid objects > 1mm. No water protection. Common for recessed downlights and track systems in dry interiors.

    • IP44 — Protected against solid objects > 1mm and water splashes from any direction. Minimum for bathrooms (Zone 2) and some covered exterior areas.

    • IP54 — Dust-protected and splash-proof. Suitable for food preparation areas, light industrial environments and covered walkways.

    • IP65 — Dust-tight and protected against water jets. The standard specification for industrial, car park, weatherproof and exposed exterior applications.

    • IP66 — Dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets. Specified for wash-down environments (food processing, commercial kitchens, swimming pools).

    • IP67 — Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion (up to 1m depth). Used for in-ground luminaires and areas subject to flooding.

    • IP68 — Dust-tight and protected against continuous submersion. Specified for underwater lighting (pools, fountains).

    Common IP Ratings by Application

Practical guidance for UK commercial specifications:

    • Offices, classrooms, retail (dry interiors) — IP20 is sufficient for recessed and suspended luminaires. IP40 for track spots and downlights.

    • Bathrooms and washrooms — Zone 0 (inside bath/shower): IP67 minimum. Zone 1 (above bath/shower to 2.25m): IP44 minimum (IP65 recommended). Zone 2 (0.6m from Zone 1): IP44 minimum.

    • Commercial kitchens — IP65 minimum, IP66 for areas subject to direct hose-down cleaning.

    • Car parks (covered) — IP65 for open-sided multi-storey car parks. IP54 may suffice for fully enclosed underground car parks.

    • Industrial/warehouse — IP65 for general industrial. IP66 for food processing and wash-down areas. IP65 minimum for any space with dust, moisture or temperature variations.

    • Exterior — IP65 minimum for wall-mounted, floodlights and bollards. IP66 for coastal or highly exposed locations. IP67 for in-ground uplights.

    • Clean rooms — IP65 minimum with smooth, sealed housings that can be wiped clean.

    • Healthcare — IP44 minimum for clinical areas. IP65 for utility and plant rooms.

    Specifying IP Ratings: Common Mistakes

    Avoid these frequent specification errors:

    1. Over-specifying — requesting IP65 for dry office environments adds cost without benefit. Match the rating to the actual environmental conditions.

    2. Ignoring IK ratings — IP rates ingress protection, not mechanical impact. For car parks, sports halls and custodial environments, also specify an IK rating (IK08 or IK10 for vandal-resistance).

    3. Forgetting cable entries — the IP rating only applies when the luminaire is correctly installed with sealed cable glands. Poorly terminated cable entries will compromise any IP rating.

    4. Assuming IP ratings are additive — IP65 does not mean the luminaire has IP6x AND IPx5 protection tested separately. The complete code is tested as a combination.

    5. Neglecting maintenance — gaskets and seals degrade over time. Luminaires in harsh environments should be inspected periodically and gaskets replaced if necessary.
