BREEAM Lighting Credits: A Specifier's Guide

    What is BREEAM?

BREEAM is a third-party certification scheme that rates the environmental performance of buildings across ten categories including Energy, Health & Wellbeing, Materials, and Management. Buildings receive a rating from Pass through Good, Very Good, Excellent to Outstanding.

BREEAM is widely mandated by local planning authorities, public-sector clients (NHS, MoD, DfE), and institutional developers. For many UK projects, achieving BREEAM Excellent is a planning condition — making the credits within the lighting designer's control critically important.

    Lighting-Related Credits: Hea 01 — Visual Comfort

Hea 01 is the primary lighting credit category and is worth up to 6 credits. It assesses:

    • Glare control — luminaires must meet UGR limits specified in BS EN 12464-1 for the relevant task area. For offices this means UGR ≤ 19; for circulation areas UGR ≤ 25.

    • Daylight provision — adequate daylight factor (typically ≥ 2% average for occupied spaces) with glare mitigation.

    • Lighting zones and occupant control — providing localised switching or dimming so occupants can adjust their immediate lighting environment. DALI addressable controls make this straightforward.

    • View out — access to an external view for regular occupants.

To score maximum credits, specify luminaires with published UGR data, integrate daylight-linked dimming, and provide occupant controllability through DALI scene panels or personal desk-mounted controllers.

    Ene 01 — Energy Performance

Ene 01 assesses the building's predicted energy consumption using the National Calculation Methodology (NCM). Lighting is one of the largest regulated energy loads in commercial buildings — typically 20–40% of the total.

Key lighting strategies to reduce the Ene 01 energy rating:

    • High-efficacy LED luminaires — specify ≥ 130 lm/W circuit efficacy to minimise installed load density (W/m²)

    • Absence/presence detection — automatic switch-off in intermittently occupied areas can reduce lighting energy by 30–50%

    • Daylight dimming — photocell-driven dimming near glazed facades reduces energy consumption by 20–40% in perimeter zones

    • Task-ambient design — lower ambient illuminance (e.g., 300 lux) supplemented by task lighting, reducing the total installed wattage

Using the SBEM or approved dynamic simulation model, the assessor calculates the Building Emission Rate (BER). High-efficiency lighting directly reduces BER and increases the Ene 01 score.

Ene 04 — Low and Zero Carbon Technologies

Ene 04 awards credits for feasibility studies and installation of low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies. While this primarily targets renewable energy systems, solar-powered exterior lighting (using integrated solar panels and battery storage) can contribute to LZC credits for site lighting.

EOS offers solar-powered bollards and column-mounted luminaires that operate entirely off-grid, providing genuine zero-carbon lighting for car parks, pathways and perimeter areas.

How to Maximise BREEAM Lighting Credits

    A summary of best-practice strategies:

    1. Specify high-efficacy LED luminaires (≥ 130 lm/W) with published UGR values to satisfy both Ene 01 and Hea 01

    2. Design a DALI or DALI-2 addressable control system with daylight dimming, absence detection and occupant scene control

    3. Use tuneable white luminaires in spaces where circadian wellbeing credits (Hea 01) are pursued

    4. Minimise installed load density — target ≤ 8 W/m² for office general lighting

    5. Include solar-powered site lighting where feasible for Ene 04 LZC credits

    6. Provide comprehensive lighting design calculations (lux levels, uniformity, UGR) as BREEAM evidence — assessors require these for Hea 01 compliance

    7. Select luminaires with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) or high TM66 circularity scores for Mat 01 credits

EOS provides BREEAM evidence packs including photometric data, EPDs, and DALI system design support.
